Zimacube Pro

Once the kickstarter campaign started shipping, it is was smooth sailing for me: The package came in a timely manner, installing truenas was painless, and everything worked without a hitch since. The build feels solid and I am looking forward to unlock all its potential. The reason I have marked it down from a five star is the cooling solution. The system fans seem not to be addressable and therefore are always on and the CPU thermal throttles which locks the maximum CPU usage to below 70%. If the promised solution works as well as advertised I am happy to give it its fifth star.

Great machine but requires better cooling

The stock cpu cooling solution is not enough for the i5 model. Have to certainly add more fans and a beefier cooler to the upper part of the machine. Possibly even modify or print a new lid that has a fan slot on it to exhaust some heat. ZimaOS seems good enough for my usage, Iā€™m not an advanced Linux/NAS user so I canā€™t weigh in on it too much. You can install unraid or truenas from what Iā€™ve read and other users are doing well with those. Aside from the cpu cooling Iā€™m very satisfied with my purchase so far

Good workmanship, butā€¦

I am very satisfied with the workmanship. However, the NAS is very loud and uses a lot of power. It would be nice if the hardware reached a higher C-state when idle, like the CPU does (according to PowerTop, the CPU reaches C-state 10)

Well Build, Software needs some wok, cooling is loud out of the box

Good build quality, OS looked nice but was lacking for me, replaced it with TrueNas which worked well. Cooling was loud and not optima, could be fixed with different fans and another cpu-cooler.
Overall very nice system for home nas.

solid piece of kit

I'm pretty happy with the hardware. I never dug into the ZimaOS as I already had an appliance running Unraid and simply swapped my drives into the Cube and was up and running with a reboot. Everything works great aside from some BIOS tweaks to quiet the fan triggers. It's a pretty serious little box if you want to avoid the hassle of building your own system from scratch. IMO the slighly premium price is worth it.
