FAQ

What makes ZimaCube different from other NAS devices?

ZimaCube stands out for its modular design and powerful features. It offers a unique 6+1 drive bay configuration, including six 3.5"/2.5" drive slots and four M.2 SSD slots. It also supports up to 10GbE networking and PCIe expansion for additional capabilities, making it a highly customizable and powerful NAS solution for personal cloud setups and home labs.

Can ZimaCube handle intensive tasks like 4K video streaming or heavy data transfers?

Yes, ZimaCube is built to handle intensive workloads like 4K video streaming and high-speed data transfers. Equipped with Intel processors (up to 12th Gen i5 in the Pro version), it supports 4K transcoding and offers transfer speeds up to 1.1GB/s when paired with NVMe storage. It is perfect for users looking to run media servers, Plex, or other demanding applications.

Does ZimaCube support RAID configurations?

Yes, ZimaCube supports a range of RAID configurations, including RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, and more. This flexibility makes it suitable for users who want to ensure data redundancy or maximize storage performance. You can easily set up RAID configurations through ZimaOS, which comes pre-installed.

How does ZimaCube handle cooling, and is it quiet?

Thanks to community feedback, we’ve upgraded ZimaCube’s cooling system for better performance under heavy tasks. The new setup enhances heat dissipation, reducing thermal throttling for more stable, reliable performance. We’ve also reduced noise levels—ZimaCube now runs quieter, and you can adjust fan speeds in the BIOS for your preferred balance of silence or cooling power.

Can I use ZimaCube for Docker and virtual machines?

Yes, ZimaCube supports Docker containers and allows for running virtual machines, making it a great choice for advanced home server setups. Powered by Intel processors like the N100 or Core i5-1235U, ZimaCube has enough processing power to handle virtualization tasks, and its ZimaOS interface provides a user-friendly way to manage Docker containers and deploy virtual machines.

Very nice but

It's a great product and overall happy with my purchase but it does fall short in a few minor ways like poor fan noise, lack of support for wake on lan for the non pro model, lack of RTC alarm or really any remote power on (there is a jumper on the board for power on on AC restoration which i use with a remote power switch). Having resolved both of those needs myself however the result is exactly what I wanted, a nice compact pair (pro and not) of boxes with easy accessible bays and a good base system and hardware behind it.

Zimecube looks nice, hopefully has long life ahead

The shipped OS is nowhere near ready, but after installing other OS and testing hardware, it works quite well. Seems like I luckily avoided many known quality issues other are having, the only current downside I know is the underwhelming cooling, but that should be fixed soon, so I remain very positive with this purchase.

Great machine but requires better cooling

The stock cpu cooling solution is not enough for the i5 model. Have to certainly add more fans and a beefier cooler to the upper part of the machine. Possibly even modify or print a new lid that has a fan slot on it to exhaust some heat. ZimaOS seems good enough for my usage, I’m not an advanced Linux/NAS user so I can’t weigh in on it too much. You can install unraid or truenas from what I’ve read and other users are doing well with those. Aside from the cpu cooling I’m very satisfied with my purchase so far

Good workmanship, but…

I am very satisfied with the workmanship. However, the NAS is very loud and uses a lot of power. It would be nice if the hardware reached a higher C-state when idle, like the CPU does (according to PowerTop, the CPU reaches C-state 10)
